I’m going to take a different tune for this Centurion speech than others have went. A lot of the centurion speeches reflect back on 100 days, and what all they learned. Make no mistake, I have learned a lot from the short time I have been here, but I really just wanted to use this opportunity to capitalize on just a couple of things.
If you guys (and gals) are anything like me, I will occasionally reflect back after a day of work, or whatever it may be and wonder if I gave it my all. Did I honestly do my best? Perhaps if you don’t, I am sure when we are lying on our death bed we would wonder whether we gave our all for our entire life. This outlook continues to be my driving force in my day-to-day life and I credit my grandfather, along with many other good traits I got from him. Ironically, my grandfather smoked since he was a kid and eventually died from lung cancer at 66 in 2013.
You can take this similar mindset I mentioned previously and apply it to your quit. Have you improved from the previous day? If not, what can you do to strengthen your quit? Could you possibly be a little more active in your activity at QD? Have you not told your extended friends and family that you are quit (I find this one to be a good one to help strengthen your quit); if you haven’t, are you scared of embarrassment if you cave or fail?
The previous two paragraphs are a little sporadic in regards to the entire idea of this speech, but just a couple of things I hope someone can read and gain some inspiration, whether it be someone that has been quit for over a thousand days, or someone who is just lurking around trying to prepare to quit dipping. If you are the latter, now is the time. Life will never be perfect, stress free and always easy going. The ideal time is now.
I try to learn something new about quitting every day. I learn something from people who succeed daily & I learn ten-fold from those people who fail – at the same time; I do not want people to fail.
Whether you realize it or not, this place, along with its members, saves lives and also improves quality of lives. I don’t think some people here understand the magnitude of the previous statement. It was something I actually picked up on pretty early – the people here are in the business of saving lives, one day at a time. If you didn’t realize that, just take a moment and think about it and process that.
Just to compound a little more on that, one thing I did learn about the clear cut and obvious benefits of quitting was the risk of stroke and heart disease. I was always concerned about cancer, but did you know that heart disease is a huge killer of those who use?
It takes roughly fifteen years for your risk of coronary disease to return to that of a non-smoker. With that being said, let’s stack some days folks.
